Mini, Portable or Desktop HIFU: Which Fits Your Room

A mini HIFU machine and a desktop platform turn up on the same search page, priced worlds apart. Very little of that gap is about ultrasound. It's about the power supply, the number of handpieces, and what one cartridge costs you per shot.

Three words, one sliding scale

Nobody standardised these labels. A factory can call anything portable. Read them as rough positions on a scale rather than as classes.

  • Mini. A handheld or a lunchbox. One transducer, often a fixed depth, a small screen or none. Frequently sold to consumers under a professional-looking photo.
  • Portable. A real console in a carry case. One or two handles, a proper touchscreen, cartridges you can swap.
  • Desktop or trolley. Bigger power supply, more handles, more cartridge depths, and a service story behind it.

Weight tells you more than the word does. Ask for gross weight and packing size first. Our own HF-01 4D HIFU platform sits at 11kg gross without its base and packs into 20 x 40 x 54cm, running on AC110V or AC220V at 50 to 60Hz. That's a full platform, and it still travels.

Our engineering archive shows the same pattern across the light and radio frequency ranges: the portable model carries one handle, the console versions add a second with a larger treatment window plus a multi-tip radio frequency handle. Format changes the handle count, not the physics.

What actually changes between the formats

Five things move when the box shrinks. Each shows up in your day, not the brochure.

One line in that table decides most purchases: service and parts. A machine with no engineer behind it is a consumable with a plug on it.

Cartridge economics beats sticker price

Here's where buyers lose money quietly. The console is a one-off. Cartridges are forever.

Each cartridge carries a finite shot count and retires when it's spent. You swap the cartridge, not the handle. So your real unit cost is cartridge price divided by usable shots, times the shots a face takes at your protocol. Work that out before you compare two quotations. A cheap console fed by expensive locked cartridges beats you slowly, while a dearer platform on sane consumables pays for itself.

Ask four things, and get them in the quotation rather than a chat window.

  • Rated shots per cartridge, per depth, in writing.
  • Landed price per cartridge at the quantity you'd really order.
  • Whether the console is region-locked or serial-locked to one cartridge supply.
  • Resupply lead time. A dead cartridge with a four-week wait is a closed room.

We won't publish a per-cartridge shot figure for a mix we haven't confirmed. A wrong number here wrecks your pricing, and one fewer number beats one false number.

Throughput, and the arithmetic of a treatment day

Throughput is where portable quietly loses. Not dramatically. Just steadily.

Lines per shot set the pace of a face. HF-01 delivers 12 lines per shot at 4 to 7MHz, with output adjustable across 10 to 200W, so a full-face map stays a sane appointment rather than a marathon. A single-handle unit forces a cartridge change every time you move between the deep fascia layer and shallow work. Each swap costs minutes and breaks the client's rhythm. Two handles fix that. A second handle beats a bigger number in the model name.

Then there's duty cycle. A smaller cabinet has less room for the power supply and less mass to soak up heat, so it's likelier to want a rest between long lists. No flyer prints that. Ask anyway, in hours of continuous use, and ask what happens at the limit. Does it throttle, warn, or stop halfway through a paying client's jawline?

Run the sums on your own book. Two clients a week and format hardly matters. Six a day and it's the whole decision.

Where portable genuinely wins

Plenty of rooms should buy a portable HIFU machine, and not as a compromise.

  • Mobile practitioners. If the machine rides in a car boot between clinics, weight and dual voltage matter more than a second handle ever will.
  • Multi-room clinics. Two portable consoles often out-earn one desktop platform, because the constraint is rooms and staff, not watts.
  • Trade demonstrations. A console you can carry through an exhibition hall gets used. One you can't, doesn't.
  • A second modality in a small room. Pair it with something that heats broadly rather than focally, such as our RF-01 radio frequency tightening platform, and you cover more of the laxity conversation without a bigger footprint.

Resale is the honest exception. Second-hand buyers want a serial they can register, a service history and a cartridge supply that still exists. Unbranded mini units have none of that, so they trade at scrap value.

Professional unit or rebadged consumer box?

Plenty of boxes are dressed up as clinical equipment. A few checks sort a professional HIFU machine from a rebadged toy.

Start with what the regulator thinks it is. In the United States a focused ultrasound stimulator system for aesthetic use is a Class II device subject to special controls, defined by its use of focused ultrasound to produce localised heating for tissue coagulation or mechanical cellular disruption. A supplier who can't name the device class in your market probably hasn't been through the process there.

Engineering standards next. IEC 60601-1 is the general safety standard for medical electrical equipment, and IEC 60601-2-62:2013 sets particular requirements for high intensity therapeutic ultrasound equipment, adding to or replacing clauses of the general standard. Which test reports exist, and who issued them? Ask to see the declaration of conformity. A real manufacturer keeps these in a folder. A rebadger has a photograph.

The clinical case for buying properly isn't abstract. A 2025 systematic review by Humphrey, Rambhia, Gmyrek and Chapas in Dermatologic Surgery read both the published literature and the reports filed to the manufacturer and user facility device experience database. Published studies mostly reported transient oedema, erythema and post-procedure pain. The database reports skewed harder: lipoatrophy, neurologic effects including nerve damage, numbness, dysesthesia and ptosis, and scarring.

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine states that only appropriately licensed and trained practitioners should perform HIFU and microfocused ultrasound procedures, and that focused ultrasound can cause unwanted tissue damage if applied too long or aimed at the wrong structure. Ultrasound isn't chasing melanin the way light is, so phototype doesn't set your energy as it does on an IPL. That's no free pass. Burns and pigment change still follow poor coupling and sloppy mapping, darker skin still carries post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk after any thermal insult, and anything resembling a lesion belongs with a clinician. The counterfeit and grey-market problem

Two problems get muddled here. They need different answers.

A grey-market machine is usually genuine hardware routed through a channel your regulator doesn't recognise. It may work perfectly and still leave you with no warranty, no registered serial and an insurance question you don't want asked. A counterfeit is hardware pretending to be a brand it isn't. The shell is copied. The transducer, the calibration and the depth it truly reaches are not. Counterfeit cartridges are the nastier version, because the cartridge decides where the energy lands.

Defend yourself the boring way. Buy from the manufacturer, or a distributor it confirms in writing. Run the serial past the maker, not the seller. Treat second-hand listings, social media offers and ex-demo bargains as suspect. In the UK a suspected counterfeit or non-compliant device goes to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, which wants the seller name, the product details, the alleged breach and supporting evidence, and keeps the reporter's identity confidential. Most markets have an equivalent route. Knowing yours before you buy is cheap.

Put these in the quotation

Not the email. The quotation, where it binds.

  1. Gross weight, packing size, input voltage and frequency range.
  2. Rated duty cycle in hours, and the behaviour at the limit.
  3. Handles included as standard, and handles sold as options, listed apart.
  4. Every cartridge depth, with rated shots and unit price at your order quantity.
  5. Whether cartridges are locked to the console or to a region.
  6. Warranty term, what it covers, and who pays freight on a repair.
  7. Spare parts availability and lead time, named in weeks.
  8. Training scope: depth selection, mapping and client screening, not button-pushing.
  9. Regulatory status in your market, plus test reports and the declaration of conformity.
  10. The manual's contraindication list, in your language, before delivery.

A supplier who answers all ten in a day is worth paying more for. One who dodges three has told you what you needed to know.
