Installing a HIFU Platform: Room, Power and Handover
HIFU installation is the week nobody budgets for. The crate lands, the room isn't ready, and a machine you have already paid for spends a fortnight in a corridor. Sort the power, the bench and the acceptance checks before the truck arrives, and you can book paying clients the same week.
The crate is bigger than the machine
Buyers plan around the brochure photograph. Freight does not. One console in our device manuals measures 640 by 400 by 1040 mm on its castors and ships inside a crate of 695 by 635 by 1435 mm, 45 kg net against 70 kg gross. Measure your doorway, lift and stairwell against the crate. A corridor is a bad place to learn this.
Uncrate with the packing list in your hand and the supplier reachable. Our device manuals set the window plainly: check the machine and its accessories the moment the package is open, and raise any problem within 24 hours. Photograph the packaging before you cut it, the rating plate, and any dent. UK regulator guidance on managing medical devices puts it coldly: finding a device broken only when someone first tries to use it delays treatment, muddies when the damage happened, and can invalidate a warranty.
Log the serial number and who unpacked it. That record is what wins the argument later.
Power is the part you cannot fix later
This is where room requirements usually go wrong, and the one item an electrician must solve before delivery rather than after. Our device manuals give the baseline. The machine runs from a three-core outlet with a working ground, and the supply has to meet the rated input on the plate. Where mains voltage is unstable they tell you to fit a regulator, and they spell out the alternative: the fuse in the protective tube box at the power socket burns out and the machine stops completely. On one platform that fuse is a 250 V, 10 A part. Cheap to replace, expensive at 3pm with a client on the couch.
- Give it a dedicated circuit. Sharing with an autoclave, a compressor or a kettle invites a voltage sag mid-pass.
- No travel adapters, no daisy-chained blocks. Regulator guidance is blunt that mains adapters should not be used on medical devices, and expects the plug to suit the local socket standard.
- Get the rating plate figures in writing first. Voltage, frequency, current draw. An electrician working from guesswork is a second visit.
- Keep it clear of your other consoles. Our manuals say avoid strong magnetic fields. The formal version is IEC 60601-1-2, the standard for electromagnetic disturbance and emissions. Ask which edition was tested.
The room: heat, damp, light, floor
Focused ultrasound consoles are not fragile, but they shed heat and dislike damp. Our device manuals give slightly different limits by model, and the overlap is what your room has to hit.

Treatment rooms run hot: two people, a lamp and a working console in a small space. If yours already sits at 30 degrees in August, air conditioning is part of the machine purchase whether you costed it or not.
Bench, trolley, couch and cables
Draw the room before you buy furniture. The operator needs both sides of the couch and needs to reach the whole face and neck without stretching the handpiece lead.
Cables belong off the floor. Route the lead over a hook or arm so it never loops under a castor. Our device manuals warn that treatment handles carry precise components, must be protected from impact and dropping, and go back in the holder after every use. That single line is your whole cable policy. A dropped handpiece is not a warranty claim, it is a purchase. Gel and wipes sit on the operator's dominant side, and the screen goes where nobody turns away from the client to read it.
Consumable storage is a clinical decision
Coupling gel looks like the dullest thing you will ever buy. It is a regulated device with a lot number, and it has caused real harm.
In 2022 the CDC reported an investigation that identified 119 Burkholderia stabilis infections across 10 US states, traced to a nonsterile ultrasound gel, with contamination confirmed in unopened product. It ended in a national recall of every gel product from that manufacturer. The FDA recall record classes the action Class 1, the most serious grade, with the determined cause recorded as process control. The CDC returned to it in 2025, reporting Paraburkholderia detections tied to nonsterile gel across three countries.
Read that with a clear head. Those infections followed procedures that broke the skin, and a HIFU pass on intact skin is a different risk picture. What transfers is stock discipline.
- Buy from a named manufacturer, with a lot number and expiry on every bottle.
- Never top up a part-used bottle from a bulk container. Refilling is how clean product stops being clean.
- Rotate by date. Capped, off the floor, out of sun, at the temperature the supplier states.
- Log lot numbers against treatment dates. If a recall names your lot, you want a list, not a memory.
- Treat cartridges as dated inventory. Check dates on arrival, and ask whether shelf life runs from manufacture or delivery. That answer decides what a slow quarter costs you.
Acceptance checks worth running with the supplier on the call
Do not let the engineer leave until these are done and recorded. Regulator guidance asks you to confirm the correct product arrived complete with its usage and maintenance information and accessories, in good working order. The standard for electrical safety testing before equipment goes into service, and after repair, is IEC 62353. The type tests in IEC 60601-1 are not built for this and can damage the device.

One caution about that last row. A first-day volunteer is still a patient. Assessment, skin typing and the decision to treat belong to a qualified clinician, not to whoever is free that afternoon. Our skin fundamentals training material lists post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation among the pigmentary changes that follow inflammation of the skin, and richly pigmented skin deserves conservative settings and a longer conversation. Consent it properly, treat one small area, document it.
Handover in writing, and what to hold payment for
Verbal handovers evaporate. Ask for a folder, and check it before the final payment leaves your account.
- Instructions for use in a language your operators actually read, plus the service manual.
- Certificates naming your model, not a sibling product. Ask which edition of IEC 60601-1-2 was tested, and whether IEC 60601-2-62, the particular standard for high intensity therapeutic ultrasound equipment, has been applied.
- Serial numbers, firmware version and rating plate data, recorded and photographed.
- The signed packing list, accessories itemised, discrepancies closed out.
- Warranty starting at commissioning, not at shipment, with consumables and wear parts named.
- Cartridge specifications and pricing: depth, frequency, line capacity, shelf life, price held for a stated period.
- A named service contact and response time, plus parts lead time and where stock sits.
- Storage conditions for gel and cartridges, stated by the supplier rather than guessed.
- A signed training record: who was trained, on what, by whom.
Now the uncomfortable half. Hold the final payment if the instructions arrive in a language nobody reads, if certificates cover a different model number, if nobody will put cartridge line capacity on paper, if there is no named service contact, if training was a ten-minute demonstration with no record, or if the self test threw an error to be fixed in some future firmware. None of that is rude.
